Galaxy S22 Ultra hard case, 12 versions later

A PLA-first hard case for the Galaxy S22 Ultra after twelve rounds of trying to get a printable snap-fit case that did not require TPU.

3D Printing 3D Design PLA Samsung Phone Case

An older real-world revision, probably around version 8, back when the corners were still a little sharper than they needed to be.

Older printed revision of the Galaxy S22 Ultra hard case installed on the phone, shown from the front in blue PLA.

This is the twelfth generation of this case.

That probably tells you two things immediately. First, I actually used it long enough to keep improving it. Second, phone cases are apparently one of those categories where “just make a quick version” quietly turns into a dozen revisions and a growing sense that maybe I should stop pretending this was ever going to stay simple.

I made this because most of the printable cases I found at the time leaned on TPU, and I specifically wanted a hard case I could print in PLA without it feeling like a compromise.

That took more iteration than I would have liked, but version 12 finally landed where I wanted it.

The real-world photo I have handy is from an older generation of the case, probably around version 8, back when the corners were still a little sharper than they should have been. So if the photo and the final model do not match perfectly, that is not your eyes playing tricks on you. It is just the usual slow march of revision numbers.

What I wanted from it

The goal here was not to make the thinnest possible shell or something especially clever. I wanted a case that actually gripped the phone well, protected the camera area, kept the rounded edges usable, and did not make the S Pen access feel like a punishment.

That all sounds very reasonable until you start modeling around a phone shaped like the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

The final version snaps on cleanly, holds firmly, and still leaves the phone pleasant to use. The pen sits fairly deep, but not so deep that getting to it becomes annoying. The camera area is protected, the side grip is better than the smooth slab deserved, and the rounded edges still feel like rounded edges instead of like they were placed under mild house arrest.

Printing it

This is meant to be printed as a hard case in PLA, which is the whole point.

I recommend printing it at 100% infill. You can also consider using fuzzy skin on the outside surface. It gives the case a surprisingly nice texture and helps it feel a little less like you are carrying around a tiny piece of freshly printed office furniture.

To install it, insert the phone button-side first and then press it into place. It should snap in cleanly.

Why I am posting it now

I have since moved over to the Pixel line and, to my mild surprise, absolutely love those phones.

So this case is no longer something I personally need sitting in active rotation. It was just sitting on my desktop, though, which is usually how projects end up staring at me until I either delete them or admit they should probably be shared.

This one seemed worth sharing.

If you still have a Galaxy S22 Ultra and want a solid printable hard case that does not require TPU, this is the best version I ended up with.
